The Rookie fans looking for season 9 on ABC's fall schedule will have to keep waiting. The network has confirmed the cop dramedy will not return on Monday, Sept. 21, with the New York Giants facing the Los Angeles Rams in Monday Night Football at 8:15 p.m. ET/PT taking over the timeslot instead.
ABC dedicates its Monday nights to football coverage from September through January each fall, and 2026 is no exception. That means The Rookie season 9 is being held back until January 2027, continuing a pattern the network has followed for the past several seasons of premiering new installments of the show in the winter rather than the fall.
While the delay extends an already long summer hiatus, it does come with a silver lining: once season 9 begins, the roughly 18-episode order is expected to air without the scheduling breaks that typically interrupt a January-to-May run, allowing the story to build momentum without gaps that could dampen viewership.
Last week did bring some ABC premieres, with Dancing with the Stars and RJ Decker returning to the lineup. However, no other new programming is expected on the network until at least October.

Fans are hoping season 9 delivers its answers and ensuing manhunt without a similarly tragic twist.
