Jac Schaeffer is developing a new "Stargate" television series for Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned exclusively from sources. The project is part of Schaeffer's overall deal with Amazon MGM, which was announced earlier this year, and a writers' room is expected to open in the near future.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures are set to executive produce the series alongside Schaeffer.
This marks Amazon's second attempt at bringing a new "Stargate" series to life. Martin Gero had previously been reported to be working on a new entry in the franchise, but that project ultimately did not move forward.
Schaeffer is well established in the genre space. She created and served as showrunner on Marvel Studios' "WandaVision" for Disney+, which became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on the streamer. The show starred Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, who reprised their film roles as Wanda and Vision, and went on to receive 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations along with other accolades, making it one of the most acclaimed TV shows of 2021.
She later created the spinoff "Agatha All Along," starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, a role Hahn reprised from "WandaVision." Schaeffer served as showrunner, writer, executive producer and director on that series.
Before her work with Marvel, Schaeffer wrote the screenplay for the Disney animated featurette "Olaf's Frozen Adventure" and the 2019 comedy "The Hustle," starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, which was a remake of the 1980s film "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."
The "Stargate" franchise began with the 1994 feature film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. It spawned the long-running series "Stargate SG-1," which ran for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge. A further spinoff, "Stargate Atlantis," aired for five seasons between 2004 and 2008.
