Jessica Lange has played five characters in American Horror Story: Constance Langdon (Murder House), Sister Jude Martin (Asylum), Fiona Goode (Coven), Elsa Mars (Freak Show) and, new in season 13, Margaret Thatcher. In AHS: 13 (2026) she plays all five.
Jessica Lange anchored the first four seasons of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's FX anthology, won two Emmys for it and left in 2015 saying she was done. She came back once, as a guest in Apocalypse, and then again as a series regular for season 13, on one condition: that she could play every character she had originated. Here is each role, season by season.

Constance Langdon (Murder House, 2011)
Lange's first role is the Harmons' sharp-tongued neighbor, a would-be star whose children are bound to the Murder House. It won her the Emmy for supporting actress in a miniseries or movie in 2012, along with a Golden Globe and her first Screen Actors Guild Award. She returned as Constance in Apocalypse episode six, "Return to Murder House" (Oct. 17, 2018), which earned her an Emmy nomination for guest actress in a drama series.
Sister Jude Martin (Asylum, 2012)
As the nun running the Briarcliff asylum in the 1960s, Lange played the season's lead, a woman whose authority collapses over the course of the story. The role brought another Emmy nomination.
Fiona Goode (Coven, 2013)
Fiona is the Supreme of a New Orleans coven, desperate to hold on to her power and her youth. It won Lange her second AHS Emmy, for lead actress in a miniseries or movie in 2014. Shooting in New Orleans was her idea, she said at PaleyFest in October 2026, and Sarah Paulson credits it with giving rise to Coven.
Elsa Mars (Freak Show, 2014)
Elsa runs a 1950s freak show in Florida and dreams of stardom. Lange has called her her favorite character and Freak Show her favorite season to film, and she pitched the circus concept to Murphy herself, sending him a book about circuses. Elsa sings, and so does Lange: in season 13 she recorded Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" for the episode of the same name.
Margaret Thatcher (AHS: 13, 2026)
Before season 13, Lange teased a fifth, unnamed character and said she'd "be curious if anybody can figure it out." It turned out to be former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, her first new AHS character since 2014.
Is Jessica Lange in AHS season 13?
Yes. AHS: 13 ran on FX from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29, 2026. Lange plays Constance, Sister Jude, Fiona, Elsa and Thatcher, with Constance "featured pretty much throughout," as she put it. Sarah Paulson is back too, in five roles of her own: Cordelia Goode, Hypodermic Sally, Ms. Venable, Mamie Eisenhower and Tuberculosis Karen.

Episode 4, "Is That All There Is?", is the one named after the Peggy Lee song Lange recorded for the season. FX renewed American Horror Story for a 14th season on Oct. 20, 2026, a week before the finale; no premise, cast or date has been announced.
Why she left, and why she came back
After Freak Show Lange said repeatedly she wouldn't return. What changed her mind, she told Good Morning America, was "the idea of bringing those four characters back," plus the mystery fifth role, and Murphy's promise of a musical number. At PaleyFest she added that the show had felt like a repertory company, and she wanted to work with the rest of the cast again. She also admitted she has never watched an episode of American Horror Story, her own included.
