Apple TV has ordered a second season of Imperfect Women, officially moving the drama out of limited-series territory roughly five months after its first season concluded. Kerry Washington will return as Eleanor, and Justin Hillian (The Chi, Snowfall) is joining the show as co-showrunner alongside series creator and season one showrunner Annie Weisman.
The series, based on a novel by Araminta Hall, originally launched as a limited series with Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara starring opposite Washington. Moss, whose Love & Squalor Pictures optioned the novel, will not reprise her on-screen role but stays on as an executive producer.
"We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I'm so excited to step back into Eleanor's shoes," Washington said in a statement. "She's intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations. We at Simpson Street along with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures can't wait to explore a fresh chapter for her and share where this story takes us next."
According to the show's logline, season two follows Eleanor as she returns to her roots in the affluent Black enclave of Martha's Vineyard, where long-held secrets "threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past."
Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV, said the show's team moved quickly to build on the first season's momentum. "After a wildly entertaining first season, driven by the performances of Kerry, Lizzie and Kate, we jumped at the opportunity to expand the world of Imperfect Women through Kerry's fan favorite character of Eleanor," Cherniss said. "Annie and Justin's thrilling new story felt like an exciting and natural next chapter. We can't wait for fans to experience it."
Imperfect Women is co-produced by 20th Television and Apple Studios. Weisman and Hillian will executive produce season two alongside Washington and Pilar Savone of Simpson Street, Moss and Lindsey McManus of Love & Squalor Pictures, and Araminta Hall.
