FX Orders 'Legends,' a Meta Sequel to Sons of Anarchy

FX has ordered "Legends," a self-described "meta-thriller" limited series that brings back the cast of "Sons of Anarchy" to play fictionalized versions of themselves.

According to the official description, the show follows the cast of "Sons of Anarchy" reuniting at a fan convention after more than a decade, where the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced on their show.

Charlie Hunnam, who starred as Jax Teller in the original series, returns as the lead. He's joined by Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi, with more casting to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The format offers a way around one of the biggest obstacles to reviving "Sons of Anarchy": most of its major characters, including Hunnam's Jax Teller, were killed off by the time the series ended, with Teller receiving his own sendoff in the finale.

"When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision," said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment President. "Charlie's talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know."

"Legends" was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, who executive produce alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn. "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter is not involved in the new project. FX Productions and 20th Television will produce the series, which will stream on FX and Hulu.

Hunnam's return to FX follows his Emmy-nominated performance in "Monster: The Ed Gein Story." He is currently filming the upcoming BBC series adaptation of John le Carré's novel "Legacy of Spies."

"Sons of Anarchy" aired from 2008 to 2014 across 92 episodes and seven seasons, following Jax Teller as he takes control of a Central Valley motorcycle club once run by his father. The series became FX's highest-rated show at the time, surpassing "The Shield," "Nip/Tuck" and "Rescue Me." It later spawned the spinoff "Mayans M.C.," which premiered in 2018, starred J.D. Pardo and ran for five seasons before concluding in 2023.
