Netflix announced Wednesday that the third season of A Man on the Inside will be its last, closing out the comedy led by Ted Danson. Production on the final season is currently underway in San Francisco.
In the new episodes, Danson's character, Charles Nieuwendyk, takes on a new undercover assignment, investigating who is trying to sabotage the philanthropic efforts of one of San Francisco's most prominent society figures.
Series creator and showrunner Michael Schur reflected on the show's run in a statement: "This series began with a retiree taking a chance at a new life. By answering a help wanted ad and venturing out into the world, Charles Nieuwendyk made his world bigger and proved that life only slows down if you let it. We are thrilled to be able to conclude his journey with one final chapter, as embodied by the great Ted Danson, who I am legally required to refer to as a 'National Treasure.'"
Netflix had renewed the show for a third season back in February, roughly two and a half months after season two premiered. The decision to make season three the finale follows a notable drop in viewership between the first and second seasons.
Returning alongside Danson are Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Eugene Cordero, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers and Mary Steenburgen. Joining them for the final season are eight actors in new recurring and guest roles.
Bernadette Peters steps into the role of Coco Van Beck, the society matriarch at the center of the season's mystery, who brings in private detective Julie (Estrada) and her operative Charles to look into the sabotage. The Van Beck surname isn't new to the show — season one featured Jama Williamson as Beatrice Van Beck, a wealthy volunteer at the retirement home where Charles first went undercover.
Annette O'Toole (Virgin River, Smallville) plays Kitt, Coco's close friend and fellow fixture of San Francisco high society. Christopher McDonald (Hacks) takes on the role of Leland, a vineyard owner and Coco's third ex-husband, while Diedrich Bader (Better Things, Veep) plays Mark Delaurio, a real estate developer who has butted heads with Coco before.
Jessica St. Clair (The Studio) joins as Chloe, a close friend of Charles' daughter Emily, played by Ellis. Nick Offerman reunites with his former Parks and Recreation collaborator Schur, playing Jack Spencer, an employee of Coco's who becomes intrigued by Charles' investigation. Rachel Dratch (SNL, 30 Rock) portrays Maud, Coco's overworked assistant, and Emmy winner Stephen Root (Widow's Bay) plays Dave, Charles' estranged brother.
A Man on the Inside is executive produced by Schur alongside Morgan Sackett, David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment, Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibañez of Micromundo Producciones, and Julie Goldman and Christopher Clements of Motto Pictures. The series, produced by Universal Television, draws its inspiration from the documentary The Mole Agent.
