Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Heads to Digital, 4K Nov. 17

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" will make its way to home viewing on Nov. 17, when it becomes available to rent and purchase on digital and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The release arrives four months after the film's theatrical debut on July 17, giving it a notably longer exclusive theatrical window than most major studio films receive today.

Nolan took a similar approach with "Oppenheimer," which ran in theaters for 123 days before hitting premium video-on-demand and physical formats in November 2023.

The nearly three-hour epic, based on Homer's poem, has become a genuine box office phenomenon. It has grossed roughly $1.35 billion worldwide, making it Nolan's highest-grossing film to date. This week, it also became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing "Deadpool & Wolverine." Domestically, the film has taken in more than $500 million, while Imax screenings alone accounted for $257 million in ticket sales — making "The Odyssey" Imax's highest-grossing release ever.

Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, the Greek king battling his way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. He's joined by a sprawling ensemble that includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, along with Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.

Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Guy Lodge praised its craftsmanship, writing that "there's nary a dull moment in the director's typically muscular, temporally complex interpretation." He noted that despite "a fine, bone-weary turn from Damon as the wandering king of Ithaca," the film ultimately "is more sensually than emotionally felt."
