The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary celebrations are in full swing, and Nintendo is marking the occasion with a batch of free digital downloads available to everyone, no purchase required.
The festivities kicked off with a dedicated Nintendo Direct, which included a new gameplay trailer for the Ocarina of Time remake detailing its changes, the announcement of new 40th anniversary merchandise, and a fresh look at the upcoming Zelda movie.
For fans looking to join the celebration without spending money, Nintendo is distributing free goodies through the Nintendo Today app. These include newly released Zelda collectible cards and animations. A different collectible card is available to download each day through the app, and users can also complete a short quiz — correct answers unlock additional digital content, including any collectible cards missed on previous days and exclusive wallpapers.
These digital cards are distinct from the official Legend of Zelda TCG that has also been released as part of the 40th anniversary event; the Nintendo Today app offerings exist only in digital form. The app is also offering new animated themes for its in-app calendar, based on The Legend of Zelda series, available to anyone who has downloaded the app.
The Nintendo Today app itself is free to download and contains no in-app purchases.
This isn't the first time Nintendo has marked a major anniversary with free digital giveaways — The Pokémon Company, of which Nintendo is a part, similarly distributed free downloads during Pokémon's ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations. While no full games are included among the current Zelda 40th anniversary freebies, more free downloads are expected as the celebrations continue.
