Zombie-themed games remain as popular as ever, and a new roundup highlights five free titles worth playing for anyone looking to fight the undead this weekend.
The list starts with the original iteration of Fortnite, a cooperative PvE mode where up to four players team up to battle waves of zombie-like enemies known as husks. The mode retains the tight controls, base-building mechanics and looter-shooter elements that later helped make Fortnite a global phenomenon, and it's still playable today as a mode within the game.
Also featured is Unturned, created by solo developer Nelson Sexton when he was just 16 years old. The survival game tasks players with fending off zombies while also managing their own needs and scavenging for resources, offering a more relaxed pace than some of the other titles on the list.
SAS: Zombie Assault 4 brings RPG depth to a top-down action shooter format, letting players upgrade guns and armor and unlock class skills and special abilities. It can be played solo or as a four-player online co-op experience, and it also includes a PvP mode.
No More Room In Hell, whose sequel has now been released, remains free-to-play in its original form. Despite functioning as a fairly standard survival shooter, it stands out for its graphical fidelity and the intensity of being overwhelmed by zombie hordes.
Rounding out the list is Dead Frontier 2, described as the only true MMO among the five. Players attempt to survive in a world overrun by the undead while encountering real-world players, adding a social and strategic layer not found in the other games.
All five titles are free to play, making them low-risk options for players looking to explore the zombie genre beyond the biggest names in the space.
