Melissa Barrera says she has no interest in returning to the "Scream" franchise as long as Spyglass Media Group controls it, more than two years after the company fired her from the series.
Asked during a recent JustWatch interview whether she would ever come back for another "Scream" film, Barrera said, "not with the company that currently holds the rights." Spyglass is a co-producer of the franchise and its current rights holder.
Barrera was dropped from "Scream" in 2023 after Spyglass said she had made antisemitic remarks by sharing social media posts critical of Israel amid the war in Gaza. At the time, Spyglass stated it had "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
Barrera made clear her stance hasn't softened. "Even with an apology, I wouldn't go back to work with them," she said. "So, not that I'm holding my breath. I don't think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven's legacy more, I think yeah."
The "In the Heights" actress appeared in 2022's "Scream" and "Scream VI" before her firing. "Scream 7" was released earlier this year without her.
Barrera also recently commented on the response to Macklemore's removal from Ed Sheeran's tour over his support of Palestine. "It was so beautiful to see Finneas and the band and all the opening acts pulling out in support of Macklemore," she said, according to AP. "It made me emotional. You know, I didn't get that when it happened to me. I didn't have any of that happen. It was too soon. People were too scared. But it's good to see that almost three years later, at least things have changed."
