Brad Pitt and David Ayer's new survival thriller, Heart of the Beast, has landed a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes based on more than 100 ratings, cementing it as a standout in both men's filmographies. The film reunites the pair 14 years after Fury, this time telling the story of a retired Special Forces veteran and his dog fighting to survive after their plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness.
The audience response builds on already strong critical notices, with Heart of the Beast holding an 88% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. That audience number surpasses Ayer's previous best, The Beekeeper, which sits at 92%, making this his highest-rated film with audiences to date. For Pitt, the 96% score ties Fight Club as his second-highest audience rating, trailing only F1 The Movie at 97%. It also edges out Se7en (95%) and Snatch (93%).

Much of the praise centers on the emotional pull of the man-and-dog story, anchored by Pitt's restrained lead performance and his three-legged canine co-star, Odin. Ayer's direction has also drawn attention for capturing the wilderness setting against the story's harsh survival conditions. Some viewers and critics have flagged uneven pacing as a flaw, but many say the emotional weight of the film outweighs that issue, with several recommending audiences bring tissues.
Despite the strong reception, Heart of the Beast faces a tough box office battle against Primetime, Forgotten Island, and Avengers: Endgame Encore. According to Variety, the film is projected to debut with $17 million to $20 million against an $82 million budget, meaning positive word-of-mouth could prove crucial to its performance.
The film's supporting cast includes J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. Cameron Alexander wrote the script, while Pitt and Ayer produced alongside Olivia Hamilton, Marty Bowen, Richard Raymond, and Nick Satriano.
Pitt's 2026 slate isn't finished yet. In two months, he returns as Cliff Booth in the Netflix sequel The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, marking his Oscar-winning character's follow-up. The film opens in select theaters on November 25 before streaming on December 23. It also marks Pitt's fourth collaboration with director David Fincher, following Fight Club, Se7en, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
