Berlinale 2026 Winners: Yellow Letters Wins Golden Bear in Berlin

The 76th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival closed with a powerful statement: cinema and politics are impossible to separate. At the center of the conversation was “Yellow Letters”, which captured the coveted Golden Bear and quickly became one of the most talked-about films of the year.

Directed by İlker Çatak, "Yellow Letters" follows Derya (Özgü Namal) and Aziz (Tansu Biçer), a married theater duo whose careers unravel after they become targets of state pressure. Though its story unfolds between Ankara and Istanbul, the film was shot entirely in Germany — a deliberate creative choice that underscores the universality of authoritarian tension.

Çatak, previously Oscar-nominated for The Teacher’s Lounge, now makes history as the first German director to win the Golden Bear in Berlin since Fatih Akin triumphed with Head-On in 2004.

A Festival Marked by Debate and Defiance

The jury, led by legendary filmmaker Wim Wenders, awarded several politically resonant films — a move widely interpreted as a response to earlier debates about whether artists should “stay out of politics.” Instead, this year’s awards spotlighted works confronting censorship, displacement, war and social unrest.

In addition to Yellow Letters, the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to Emin Alper for Salvation, a tense rural drama examining escalating violence in a remote mountain village.

The Silver Bear Jury Prize was claimed by Lance Hammer’s Queen at Sea, a moving portrait of aging, memory and devotion.

Sandra Hüller and British Icons Shine in Acting Categories

German star Sandra Hüller earned the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance for her transformative role in Rose, where she portrays a woman navigating rigid gender constraints in 17th-century Europe. Hüller continues her international rise following her Oscar-nominated performance in Anatomy of a Fall.

In the supporting categories, British screen legends Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay were honored for Queen at Sea, playing an elderly couple confronting severe dementia with tenderness and quiet resilience.

Directing, Screenwriting and Artistic Vision

Best Director went to British filmmaker Grant Gee for Everyone Digs Bill Evans, a fragmented biographical portrait of the iconic jazz pianist.

The Silver Bear for Best Screenplay was awarded to Geneviève Dulude-de Celles for Nina Roza, while Anna Fitch’s experimental documentary Yo (Love Is a Rebellious Bird) earned the prize for Outstanding Artistic Contribution.

Beyond the Main Competition

Political statements extended beyond the feature competition. Lebanese filmmaker Marie-Rose Osta won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film with Someday a Child, while Abdallah Alkhatib received the Documentary Award for Chronicles From a Siege. Several acceptance speeches referenced global conflicts, drawing strong reactions inside and outside the festival.

Festival director Tricia Tuttle acknowledged that this year’s Berlinale felt “raw and emotionally charged,” but emphasized that open dialogue remains central to the event’s identity.
