Sony-Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still the widest release in American theaters heading into its fifth weekend, even with two new major titles hitting screens. The film will play in 3,678 theaters this weekend, a slight dip from 4,006 the previous weekend, but enough to keep it ahead of the pack.
That means Brand New Day is edging out the Looney Tunes legal comedy Coyote vs. Acme, which opens in 3,575 theaters despite a strong 95 percent critics score and 92 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Coyote vs. Acme is tracking for a domestic opening between $14 million and $22 million. The reception suggests the film was worth releasing rather than being shelved for a tax write-down, which was Warner Bros.' original plan for it.
Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars opens just behind Coyote vs. Acme, in 3,330 theaters. Reviews for the film have been largely negative, though The Hollywood Reporter's review was positive. Its domestic opening is projected at $9 million to $14 million.
Meanwhile, Brand New Day continues to pile up records since its July 31 release. It set marks for biggest opening day ($169 million), biggest domestic opening weekend ($360 million), and biggest Monday ever ($47 million). It also became the fastest movie to reach $500 million, doing so in seven days. It now stands as the second-biggest movie ever domestically and the highest-grossing movie of 2026.
With a worldwide total of $2.24 billion and counting, the film is expected to add another $22 million to $27 million domestically this weekend — enough, projections suggest, to push it past Titanic on the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
