Even 24 years after Firefly's cancellation, fans of the space Western still consider it one of television's most painful losses, but Syfy's Killjoys is drawing attention as the series that comes closest to filling that gap. Killjoys, which premiered in 2015, follows interplanetary bounty hunters Dutch, Johnny, and D'avin as they take on warrants throughout a region called the Quad while trying to stay neutral amid escalating political tensions that push the system toward class war.
Dutch, played by Hannah John-Kamen, leads the trio and is described as resembling a combination of Firefly's Mal and River in her role as a team leader with a mysterious past. Like Firefly, Killjoys follows a loose "mission of the week" structure, with its characters accepting jobs that keep their ship flying. The two shows even share direct episode parallels — Firefly's "War Stories" and Killjoys' "A Glitch in the System" both center on characters revealing personal truths while being tortured.
Despite the similarities in humor, banter, and the lived-in feel of life aboard a ship, Killjoys distinguishes itself with a broader mythology, introducing a dangerous alien species and expanding its political storylines and lore almost from the start, whereas Firefly left much of its background unexplained. Because of this alien-driven, politically complex narrative, Killjoys has also been compared to The Expanse rather than viewed simply as a Firefly imitation.
Unlike Firefly, which ended abruptly after only 14 episodes, Killjoys was allowed to conclude naturally, running 50 episodes over five seasons with a full ending. On Rotten Tomatoes, Firefly holds a 77% critics' score and a 96% audience score, while Killjoys posted a 95% critics' score and a 90% audience score. An animated Firefly reboot is also in the works, though it remains to be seen whether it can recapture the original's impact. Killjoys' completed story, while satisfying, may be part of why it hasn't developed the same lingering cultural mystique that continues to surround Firefly's unfinished tale.
