Andrew Garfield says he hopes his new film lands as a pointed message to today's wealthiest power players. The two-time Oscar nominee stars as Ploughman, a character inspired by the legend of Robin Hood, in Paul Greengrass's The Uprising, which premieres Sept. 10 in the United States.
During a Q&A, Garfield said billionaires should be "scared shitless" by the film. The remark came as the conversation turned to a line from the movie itself: "There will be no peace until we are healed." Greengrass, who wrote and directed the film, said the sentiment is "true of today as it is 600 years ago, for sure."
Garfield expanded on that idea, drawing a direct line to the ultra-wealthy. "I'm going to include the billionaires in that as well, because they're the ones that might be the most soul sick," he said. "They're the ones that might need the healing the most in a way."
The Uprising is described as a retelling of the true events that inspired the Robin Hood legend. Garfield plays a farmer in 1831 England who leads a rebellion against King Richard II, played by Woody Norman, after a brutal tax is imposed in the wake of a devastating plague.
