Jack Osbourne Reveals the Truth Behind Black Sabbath’s Charity Funds

Confusion has surrounded the true financial impact of Black Sabbath’s historic farewell concert, Back To The Beginning. Now, Jack Osbourne has stepped forward to set the record straight — and the real figures may surprise fans.

The one-night-only event took place at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5 last year, marking the final live appearance of Black Sabbath’s original lineup. The show became even more emotional when Ozzy Osbourne passed away just weeks later, turning the concert into a symbolic goodbye for millions of fans worldwide.

Shortly after the event, wildly different numbers began circulating online. Some reports claimed the concert generated nearly $200 million for charity — a figure that quickly went viral across major news outlets and social media platforms.

Jack Osbourne: “Those Numbers Were Completely False”

Speaking on the Painful Lessons podcast, Jack Osbourne dismissed those headline-grabbing claims, calling them “pure fiction.” According to Jack, the reality of organizing a massive stadium concert — even one for charity — means significant costs still apply.

While the performers waived their fees and much of the crew volunteered their time, production expenses such as staging, travel, accommodation, and logistics still had to be covered. Once everything was settled, the actual donation total was far more modest than early reports suggested.

Jack explained that each of the three supported charities — Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorns Children’s Hospice — ultimately received roughly £1.5 to £2 million each. That puts the final donation total at around £6–7 million overall.

“Of course, we wish it had been hundreds of millions,” Jack joked. “That would’ve been incredible. But that just wasn’t the reality.”

Sharon Osbourne Previously Addressed the Rumors

Sharon Osbourne had also publicly rejected the inflated figures months earlier, calling them unrealistic and questioning how such numbers even emerged. In a later podcast appearance, she estimated the total raised to be approximately $11 million, reinforcing Jack’s more recent explanation.

She also emphasized the extraordinary generosity behind the event, noting that every artist involved donated their time without hesitation. Travel, accommodation, and production costs were covered by the Osbournes themselves to ensure as much money as possible reached the charities.

A Historic Final Bow for Black Sabbath

Back To The Beginning was the first time Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward shared the stage together since 2005. The band performed a tightly focused four-song set, closing the night with Ozzy addressing the crowd in an emotional farewell.

“This is the last song ever,” he said at the time. “Your support has given us an unbelievable life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Legacy Beyond the Numbers

While the final donation total may not match the eye-watering figures that initially dominated headlines, the concert’s cultural impact — and the goodwill generated — remains undeniable. Fans witnessed the end of an era, and the charities involved still benefited from millions raised through one of heavy metal’s most meaningful farewell moments.

As discussions around the show continue, one thing is clear: Back To The Beginning was never about the money alone — it was about legacy, gratitude, and giving back.
