Noah Kahan surprised fans at his sold-out Rose Bowl Stadium show in Pasadena, California, on Saturday by bringing out Chappell Roan for a duet of her song 'California.'
The track, from Roan's 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, addresses her move from Missouri to Los Angeles to pursue her music career, making it a fitting choice for the L.A.-area stop on Kahan's The Great Divide tour. The moment came a few songs before the encore, part of a 27-song set Kahan played that night, according to setlist.fm.
Roan began the song a cappella before Kahan joined in on acoustic guitar, and the two traded verses and sang the chorus together. In fan-filmed footage, the pair fist bump before Roan thanks him for the invitation. "Noah always stands up for me, seriously," she said. "He's a good person, for real."
Kahan returned the praise before the performance. "This is the first song I ever heard of Kayleigh's and the reason I fell in love with her music, and I'm just really proud of her and thankful that she would come sing with me. So this is 'California,'" he said, using Roan's given first name.
Kahan's Great Divide tour continues Monday at Petco Park in San Diego, with the North American leg wrapping Aug. 31 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle before he heads overseas this fall.
Roan, meanwhile, has several upcoming dates of her own. She's set to perform at Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields, an all-women lineup event, in Irvine, California, on Aug. 29. On Oct. 21 and 22, she will headline the Super Graphic Spectacular at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, with proceeds benefiting her Midwest Princess Project. Launched in 2025, the initiative provides fostering care, connection, and access to resources for trans youth.
